[Veterinary Drug Name]
Generic name: Oxytetracycline Tablets
Trade name:
English name: Oxytetracycline Tablets
Pinyin: Tumeisu Pian
[Main Ingredients] Oxytetracycline
[Description] This drug is of light yellow tablets.
[Pharmacological Action] Pharmacodynamics: Oxytetracycline belongs to tetracycline broad-spectrum antibiotics, and it has strong effect on Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus, hemolytic streptococcus, Bacillus anthraci, Clostridium tetanus and Clostridium. However, such effect is weaker than β-lactams. It is sensitive to Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Brucella and Pasteurella, but it is not as sensitive as aminoglycosides and amide alcohols antibiotics. This drug can also inhibit rickettsia, chlamydia, mycoplasma, spirochetes, actinomycetes and some protozoa.
Pharmacokinetics: Oxytetracycline is absorbed irregularly and incompletely if administered orally. It is absorbed easily by hungry animals with a bioavailability of about 60%~80%, and it is mainly absorbed in the upper small intestine. Magnesium, aluminum, iron, zinc, manganese and other polyvalent metal ions in the gastrointestinal tract form insoluble chelates when used with this drug, thus reducing the absorption of the drug. The blood concentration peaks in 2-4 hours after oral administration. After absorption, it is widely distributed in the body, easily infiltrated into pleural fluid, ascites and breast milk, and can also enter the fetal circulation through the placental barrier, but with a low concentration in the cerebrospinal fluid. Oxytetracycline is mainly excreted in its original form by glomerular filtration.
[Drug Interaction] (1) It has a synergistic action when used with macrolides such as tylosin and also has a synergistic action when used with colistin due to enhanced bacterial absorption of this class of drugs.
(2) All drugs in this class can form compounds with divalent and trivalent cations, etc. Therefore, its absorption is lowered when it is administered orally with antacids such as calcium, magnesium and aluminum, iron-containing drugs, or food such as milk, resulting in a decrease in the blood concentration of the drug.
(3) When administered orally with sodium bicarbonate, it causes a decrease in the gastric solubility of oxytetracycline, thereby reducing its absorption and tubular reabsorption, and speeding up the excretion.
(4) The blood urea nitrogen will rise if it is used with diuretics.
[Function and Use] Tetracycline antibiotic, for the treatment of infections of sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and mycoplasma.
[Dosage and Administration] Oral administration: 0.4-1 tablet/time per 10kg of body weight for pigs, foals, calves and lambs; 1-2 tablets/time per 10kg of body weight for poultry; 0.6-2 tablets/time per 10kg of body weight for dogs; 2-3 times a day, administered for 3-5 consecutive days.
[Adverse Reaction] (1) Local irritation, especially a certain irritation to the digestive tract if administered in a fasting state.
(2) Intestinal flora disorder. Herbivores such as horses and cattle may suffer from vitamin deficiencies in mild cases, secondary infections in severe cases, and even lethal diarrhea.
(3) Damage to tooth and bone development.
(4) Certain injuries of the liver and kidneys. Lethal renal poisoning has been occasionally observed.
[Precautions] (1) It is prohibited to be used for affected animals with severe hepatic and renal dysfunction.
(2) It is prohibited to be used for pregnant and lactating livestock and young animals.
(3) It should not be used for adult ruminants and horses per os. Long-term administration may induce secondary infections.
(4) Oral administration with dairy products and feeds with high calcium content should be avoided.
[Withdrawal Period] 7 days for cattle, sheep and pigs, and 5 days for poultry; 2 days for the egg withdrawal period; 72 hours for the weaning period.
