[Description] This drug is of white or off-white powder.
[Pharmacological Action] Pharmacodynamics: Fenbendazole is a benzimidazole antihelmintic. It acts by binding to the microtubule proteins of nematodes to develop the anthelmintic action. Its anthelmintic spectrum is not as wide as that of albendazole, but its action is slightly stronger. It is highly effective against Parascaris equorum, adult and larval Oxyuris equi, Probstmayria vivipara, Strongylus vulgaris, Strongylus edentatus, Strongylus equinus and Strongylus minutus in horses; Haemonchus, Ostertagia, Trichostrongyle, Bunostomum, Nematodirus, Cooperia, Oesophagostomum and adult and larval Dictyocaulus viviparus in cattle. It has an excellent anthelmintic action on adult and larval Haemonchus, Ostertagia, Trichostrongyle, Cooperia, Nematodirus, Bunostomum, Chabertia, Oesophagostomum, Trichuris and Dictyocaulus in sheep. Additionally, this drug can also inhibit the egg-laying of most gastrointestinal nematodes. It is also effective against Hyostrongylus rubidus, Ascaris suum and adult and larval Oesophagostomum in pigs. At a daily dose of 50 mg/kg for 3 consecutive days, it is highly effective against hookworms, roundworms and Trichuris in dogs and cats. At a daily dose of 50 mg/kg for 5 consecutive days, it is highly effective against feline lungworms (Aelurostrongylus abstrusus); after being administered for 3 consecutive days, it is highly effective against feline stomachworms (Ollulanus). It has a good effect on gastrointestinal and respiratory nematodes in poultry.
Pharmacokinetics: After fenbendazole is administered orally, it is absorbed slowly by ruminants and slightly faster by monogastric animals. The blood concentration peaking time is 24 hours for dogs and 2-3 days for sheep. The absorbed fenbendazole is metabolized into sulfoxide (active orfendazole) and sulphone. For cattle, sheep and pigs, 44%-50% of fenbendazole is excreted in its original form in feces and less than 1% is excreted in urine. One administration is ineffective for dogs and cats and 3 days of treatment are required.
[Function and Use] Antihelmintic, for the treatment of nematodosis and teniasis of livestock and poultry.
[Dosage and Administration] On the basis of this drug. Oral administration: 0.1-0.15 g/time per 1kg of body weight for horses, cattle, sheep and pigs; 0.2-1 g/time per 1kg of body weight for poultry; 0.5-1 g/time per 1kg of body weight for dogs and cats, administered for 3 consecutive days.
[Adverse Reaction] No adverse reactions will occur in general with the proper use of the recommended dosage and administration. Allergic reactions may occur secondary to the release of antigens by dead parasites, especially at high doses. Vomiting has been occasionally observed in dogs or cats when this drug was taken orally, and a case of leukopenia of various types has been reported in a dog after the administration of this drug.
[Precautions] (1) It is prohibited for edible horses and lactating cattle and sheep.
(2) It is contraindicated in the progestational period as it may cause fetal monstrosity and has embryotoxicity.
(3) A single dose is usually ineffective for dogs and cats and 3 days of treatment are required.
[Withdrawal Period] 14 days for cattle and sheep and 3 days for pigs; 5 days for the weaning period.
