[Veterinary Drug Name]
Generic name: Oxytetracycline Injection
Trade name:
English name: Oxytetracycline Injection
Pinyin: Tumeisu Zhusheye
[Main Ingredients] Oxytetracycline
[Description] This drug is of yellow to pale brownish-yellow transparent liquid.
[Pharmacological Action] Pharmacodynamics: Oxytetracycline belongs to tetracycline broad-spectrum antibiotics, and it has strong effect on Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus, hemolytic Streptococcus, Bacillus anthraci, Clostridium tetanus and Clostridium spores. However, such effect is weaker than β-lactams. It is sensitive to Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Brucella and Pasteurella, but it is not as sensitive as aminoglycosides and amide alcohols antibiotics. This drug can also inhibit rickettsia, chlamydia, mycoplasma, spirochetes, actinomycetes and some protozoa.
[Drug Interaction] ① It can aggravate the renal function damage if it is used together with a strong diuretic such as furosemide. ② It is a rapid bacteriostatic drug and can interfere with the bactericidal effect of penicillins on bacteria during the reproductive period. Simultaneous use should be avoided. ③ Insoluble complexes can be formed when this drug is used together with calcium salts, iron salts or drugs (including Chinese herbal medicines) containing metals such as ionized calcium, magnesium, aluminum, bismuth and iron, which will reduce the absorption of drugs.
[Function and Use] Tetracycline antibiotic, for the treatment of infections of some Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, rickettsia and mycoplasma.
[Dosage and Administration] Intramuscular injection: 0.033-0.067 ml/time per 1kg of body weight for livestock.
[Adverse Reaction] (1) Local stimulation effect. For this type of drug, hydrochloric acid aqueous solutions have strong irritation, and intramuscular injection can cause pain, inflammation and necrosis at the injection site.
(2) Intestinal flora disorder. After tetracyclines produce broad-spectrum inhibitory effect on enterobacteria in horses, secondary infection will be caused by drug-resistant Salmonella or unknown pathogens (including Clostridium spores, etc.), resulting in severe or even fatal diarrhea. This situation often occurs after high-dose intravenous administration. However, it may also be caused by low-dose intramuscular injection.
(3) Impact on the development of teeth and bones. Tetracyclines bond with calcium after entering the body and deposit in teeth and bones with calcium. This kind of drug is prone to penetrate the placenta and enter the milk. Therefore, it is prohibited to be used for pregnant animals, lactating animals and small animals. The milk of lactating cows is prohibited from going on the market during medication.
(4) Liver and kidney damage. This kind of drug has toxic effects on liver and kidney cells. Tetracycline antibiotics can cause dose-dependent renal function changes in many animals.
(5) Anti-metabolism effect. Tetracyclines can cause azotemia, which can be aggravated by presence of steroids. This kind of drug can also cause metabolic acidosis and electrolyte imbalance.
[Precautions] (1) This drug should be kept out of light and tightly sealed in a cool, dark and dry place for storage. Sun exposure should be avoided. Moreover, this drug should not be placed in metal containers.
(2) Gastroenteritis can sometimes occur in horses after injection. Therefore, it should be used with caution.
(3) It is contraindicated when the liver and renal function of the affected animals are seriously damaged.
[Withdrawal Period] 28 days for cattle, sheep and pigs; 7 days for the weaning period.
