Veterinary OTC For external use
[Veterinary Drug Name]
Generic name: Potassium Permanganate
Trade name:
English name: Potassium Permanganate
Pinyin: Gaomengsuanjia
[Main Ingredients] Potassium permanganate
[Description] This drug is of black-purple, elongated rhombic crystal or granules with a bluish metallic luster; it is odorless. It can easily explode when in contact with certain organic materials or oxidizable substances.
[Pharmacological Action] Pharmacodynamics: Potassium permanganate is a strong oxidizing agent that releases nascent oxygen upon encountering organic matter, heat, acid, or alkali, thereby exhibiting bactericidal, deodorizing, and oxidizing effects. Its antibacterial action is stronger than hydrogen peroxide. During oxidation reactions, potassium permanganate reduces to brown manganese dioxide, which can form protein salt complexes with proteins. Therefore, at low concentrations, potassium permanganate has an astringent effect on tissues. It can oxidize alkaloids such as morphine and strychnine, phenol, chloral hydrate, chlorpromazine, phosphorus, and cyanides, thus removing their toxicity. As a result, this product is commonly used for disinfection, hemostasis, and astringency of skin wounds and mucosal inflammation, as well as for detoxification in cases of organic poisoning.
The bactericidal activity of potassium permanganate increases in acidic environments. A 2% to 5% solution can kill spores within 24 hours. Adding 1.1% hydrochloric acid to a 1% solution can kill anthrax spores within 30 seconds. Organic materials can easily decompose potassium permanganate, reducing its effectiveness.
[Function and Use] Potassium permanganate is a strong oxidizing agent that releases nascent oxygen upon encountering organic matter, heat, acid, or alkali, thereby exhibiting bactericidal, deodorizing, and oxidizing effects. It is commonly used for disinfection, hemostasis, and astringency of skin wounds and cavity inflammation, as well as for detoxification in cases of organic poisoning.
[Dosage and Administration] For irrigation of cavities and gastric lavage: Prepare a 0.05% to 0.1% solution; for wound irrigation: Prepare a 0.1% to 0.2% solution.
[Adverse Reaction] (1) High concentrations of potassium permanganate have irritant and corrosive effects.
(2) Oral administration can cause gastrointestinal irritation symptoms, leading to severe breathing and swallowing difficulties in serious cases.
[Precautions] (1) It should be ensured that different concentrations of the solution are used according to their intended purposes.
(2) Aqueous solutions should be freshly prepared and stored away from light, as they can easily lose efficacy. Prolonged storage may cause the solution to turn brown and become ineffective.
(3) Due to its irritant effect on the gastrointestinal tract, potassium permanganate solution should not be repeatedly used for gastric lavage in cases of accidental organic poisoning.
(4) In cases of poisoning after oral administration of this drug, warm water or a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution should be used for gastric lavage. Milk, soy milk, or aluminum hydroxide gel should be administered orally to delay absorption.
[Withdrawal Period] It is not required.
